  1st Quarter Extra-Credit

 

  1. Article of The Day:  For each day between today and November 3rd, a student may turn in one article of the day.  The objective is to find an article in a newspaper or magazine that pertains to biology and the world of science.  For each article the student must submit, with the article, a summary that includes the following:

·        A summary of the article

·        Why is the story important? 

·        What affect could the story have on society?

 

Each submission should be organized, well labeled with name and date, and have the original article attached neatly to the back.  All submissions are judged solely on an acceptable/unacceptable basis and Mr. Litz reserves the right to reject any submission for failure to follow above guidelines or for a general lack of meaningful content. VALUE:  1 Test Point per Day

 

  1. Leaf Collector:  Students must collect 10 leafs of the following color:  Red, green, orange, and yellow.  These leaves will be used in our chromatography experiment this winter.  Leaves must be placed in sandwich bags,  FROZEN,  and labeled with the student's name and lecture period.    VALUE:  10 Quiz Points

 

  1. Pond Water:  Students must collect a minimum of 1 liter of pond water from the surface as well as the bottom of the pond.  Containers should be transparent and labeled with the students name and the location of the sample.  An effort should be made to include aquatic plants (ex. duckweed, elodea, etc.) VALUE: 5 Test Points.

 

  1. Deer Heart:  Students who hunt, or have a friend or relative who hunts, may bring in a frozen heart for later dissection in the spring.  The heart must be cleaned, sealed in a plastic bag, and frozen prior to handing it in.  Mr. Litz must be informed that the student is bringing in the heart one day in advance to schedule its storage.  Cow, bear, and squirrel hearts are also acceptable.  VALUE:  5 Test Points per Heart (Maximum 2 Hearts).

 

  1. Online Textbook Signup:  Sign up for the online textbook by October 3rd and receive 5 Quiz Points.

 

 2nd Quarter Extra-Credit

The deer heart extra-credit is available until the 4th quarter.

 1.  Cell Communication Essay (Due the day of the Cell Unit exam.)

Communication occurs among the cells in a multicellular organism. Choose THREE of the following examples of cell-tocell communication, and for each example, describe the communication that occurs and the types of responses that result from this communication.  The result should be an essay between 1 and 2 pages long.

Communication between two plant cells.

Communication between two immune-system cells.

Communication either between a neuron and another neuron, or between a neuron and a muscle cell.

Communication between a specific endocrine-gland cell and its target cell.
